Sally Browder (Dwight Yoakam, The Red Aunts)

Los Angeles-based producer, engineer, and mixer Sally Browder has three decades of experience and credits with artists such as Dwight Yoakam, The Red Aunts, Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets), Rocket from the Crypt, and Amy Rigby. Influential music publication MOJO Magazine once famously referred to Browder's 'knuckle punch sound.' Browder works across all genres, from singer-songwriters to country and punk bands.

How do you typically approach the mixing of a song?

Some songs come to me with specific arrangements and many come in with a looser structure. After I organize the tracks and set up basic levels and panning, I tweak the arrangement to create sonic space for the vocal, through the dynamics of the arrangement and the instruments. I build the mix around the vocal. Balance is everything.

Do you have any tips for getting vocals to sit nicely in a mix?

I start with basic compression and rides to make each lyric clear. I use light EQ, parallel compression, and a variety of effects depending on the song. I aim for a natural-sounding vocal. I like to hear the vocals well without overwhelming the mix.

What advice do you have for aspiring female mixers or producers looking to get a break in the industry?

My advice for mixers and producers of all ages and genders is always keep your ears, heart, and mind open.
